Forester stands tall in serious 4x4 comparison

        Jun 15 , 2004 [Australia]
The Subaru Forester X has rated highly in a comparison test of five "soft-roaders" against the new Jeep Cherokee, published in the July edition of 4x4 Australia magazine.

The 11-page feature ranks Cherokee against Forester, Toyota RAV4 Cruiser, Mazda Tribute Limited, Nissan X-Trail ST and Land Rover Freelander.

Journalist Philip Lord says: "The best overall balance goes to the Forester - itÅfs a little soft at the rear and steering needs more feel, but it has a low center of gravity, good chassis dynamics and ride."

4x4 says that if off-roading is important above all else, the Jeep gets the nod "But to name just a few issues, the Jeep has interior packaging problems, poor ergonomics and poor engine performance/economy. Quite simply, if off-roading is imperative, I suggest you look elsewhere."

Lord adds: "Among the rest here, Forester takes the crown. It melds on/off-road ability, interior packaging and practicality in a safe, strong, well-priced package."
