Canadian rally veterans John and Clarke Paynter claimed their second consecutive victory in the Class 9 Modified Large class of the Targa competition at the Targa Newfoundland, over six minutes ahead of their nearest competition. In their Impreza WRX STi, the pair also finished fourth overall in the Modern Division.
Subaru's Philippe Crowe and Nadine Filion took fourth place overall in the Touring Class Equipped in a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT sedan. For the well known Québec automotive journalists, this was an impressive result for these first-time Targa Newfoundland competitors, who finished just 27 seconds behind repeat Touring Class winners Jean-Francois Drolet of Neuville, PQ and Rejean Beaulieu of St. Agapit, PQ in a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe.
"Everyone at Subaru Canada congratulates our two teams on their excellent results at the Targa Newfoundland," said Norio Osakabe, president, chairman and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. "This is our first year as a corporate team sponsor, and I'd say that we've been well rewarded by the commitment and competitive spirit of our teams."
Private Subaru entries had some impressive results, as well. Chris Collingwood and Sean Longhi from Newfoundland won the Touring Class Not Equipped in a Subaru WRX STi.
Bill Arnold won the classic division of the Targa competition for the second year in a row in a 1972 BMW Bavaria, edging out Jud Buchanan and Peter Wright by just five seconds. In the modern division, the American team of Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes claimed the top spot by seven seconds in a 1988 BMW M3.
