Crocker wins Queensland and extends Championship lead

Jun 15 , 2003 [Australia]
Subaru driver, Cody Crocker, has produced another brilliant drive today to add a Heat Two win to his Heat One victory yesterday and take the 2003 Falken Tyres Rally Queensland title.

Crocker's winning margin today was 10.3 seconds over the Mitsubishi of Ed Ordynski with fellow Subaru Rally Team Australia driver Dean Herridge taking third place for the second day in a row, a further 28.7 seconds back.

In deciding the spoils of the weekend Crocker was a clear winner, collecting 41 points, with Herridge and Ordynski finishing tied with 28 points each. The Mitsubishi driver was given second on a countback due to having a faster combined time.

The 31-year-old Crocker has now won all four heats contested in the 2003 Australian Rally Championship Super Series and leads the national driver's championship with the maximum 82 points, having once again secured the bonus point for winning the most stages across the weekend – seven of the 16 contested.

His fellow Subaru drivers dominate the ARC points table after the second of six rounds, with Simon Evans holding down second place with 44 points, despite failing to finish today, and Dean Herridge third with 42 points.

Crocker's remarkable season also includes a win at the Subaru Rally of Canberra in April and comes on top of losing his leader and mentor, Possum Bourne. The only time the young Victorian has lowered his colours this season was in Rally New Zealand, where he took on the best production car drivers in the world and finished second.

This weekend's victory was particularly sweet for Crocker, who maintained his composure throughout the gruelling 235 competitive kilometres in an event he rates as one of his most challenging ever.
"This took two days of incredible concentration," said Crocker. "There was no rhythm with the road conditions changing constantly, so to get through so cleanly and still come out the fastest is really pleasing."
"If anyone had said before the season that after the second round we'd have four wins from four starts and maximum points we'd have found it hard to believe, but we're on a roll and our confidence is sky high."

"Full credit to Greg (Foletta) this weekend who did an awesome job with the notes. We are learning so much every time we go out and getting your pace notes right, and believing in them, is one of our key lessons. On an event like this it is absolutely critical"

"We were pushed hard all weekend by various competitors. Simon Evans was quick on both days but had problems along the way which cost him plenty. Scott Pedder was really good today and he set the pace until he went out. Then Ed Ordynski kept the pressure on us right to the end. But we held it together really well and with the New South Wales round only three weeks away, we can't wait to get back out there again and see if we can keep building our championship lead."

"It's a great weekend for the team. Dean (Herridge) did a fantastic job as well. We came here knowing Possum would want us to "do the business' and that is exactly what we've all done."

Herridge was delighted with his second podium result for the weekend. "We set ourselves the goal of being consistently on the podium this season and things are working out well for us."
"It is giving us confidence and we are establishing ourselves as one of the top outfits in the championship."
The Premier State Rally gets takes place around the Wyong state forest from the 4th to the 6th of July with two Super Special Stages at Eastern Creek on Friday July 4.
