Burns leads Subaru to victory at Rally Argentina 2000 WRC Round 6

May 14 , 2000
Subaru World Rally Team driver Richard Burns piloted the Subaru Impreza WRC2000 to victory in the Rally Argentina, held May 11-14. Burns spent much of Leg 1 in a tough battle for the top with Peugeot's Marcus Gronholm. However, he fell back to sixth place after his car encountered minor mechanical problems when a deep-water splash damaged the turbo-charger.

Burns avoided any such trouble on Leg 2, and a judicious tire choice helped propel him into the lead as he set the fastest time on six of the day's seven stages. He scored four more fastest times on Leg 3 to wrap up the victory with a dominating performance. His teammate Juha Kankkunen, also driving a Subaru Impreza, achieved a respectable fourth-place finish, gaining three valuable points for the team.

As a result, the Subaru team has a total of 54 manufacturers points, with a 23-point cushion over second-place Ford. In addition, Burns extended his leading total of driver's points to 38, and has a 14-point advantage over Gronholm, his closest rival. Subaru thus holds a solid grip on both top positions.
