Subaru 1-2 finish in Rally of Agentina, WRC Round 7

The Rally of Argentina, round 7 of the 1999 WRC, was held from May 22 to 25. Juha Kankkunen, driving a Subaru Impreza, recorded the first 1999 WRC winfor the Subaru World Rally Team. This is also a personal milestone for Kankkunen, since it ties him with Toyota's Carlos Sainzfor the most WRC victories, at 22 each. In addition, Kankkunen's teammate Richard Burns camein second for a 1-2 finish for Subaru.

The two Subaru cars took the lead in the early stages, with Kankkunen and Burns alternately setting best times throughout the rally. On thelast day in Special Stage 21, Kankkunen displayed overwhelming speed to record thebest time, overtake Burns and snatch victory.

A mere 2.4 seconds separated Kankkunen and Burns, but the time difference between Burns and the third-placed Auriol of Toyota was 39.6 seconds.Clearly, in this rally the two Subaru Imprezas were in a class of their own.
