Subaru have been identifying the type of material on plastic parts as part of our recycling effort from 1973. Since then, an “Automotive Recycling System” has been created for the active recycling and proper treatment of used vehicles. In fiscal 2007, Subaru recorded an ASR* recycling ratio of 72.9%, which exceeds levels set for fiscal 2015 (70% or more).
*ASR: Automobile Shredder Residue: Residue after scrapped metals for recycling removed from shredded car body

Subaru have links with vehicle dismantlers, shredders and waste disposal operators located throughout Japan, and designs vehicles with recycling in mind to ensure maximum use of resources. To better improve the recycling ratio, comprehensive strategies have been implemented in every step of production to waste vehicle collection, ranging from using materials that are easy to recycle, easier identification of materials, and increased use of recycled materials.

- Using materials that are easy to recycle.
- Advances in wire harness dismantling.
- Easier identification of materials (used on bumpers etc).
- Efforts to improve proper disposal (reduction of freon gas (air-conditioner coolant), advances in airbag disposal).
- Recycling waste materials (paint sludge).
- Actively utilise recycled materials sourced from other industries.
- Cooperating with Subaru distributors to gather old parts and recycled parts.
- Recycling of each part found in used bumpers.
- Reduction of pollutants included in parts.
