During it’s annual awards presentation in Washington, DC, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. with the EPA 2006 ‘New Partner Gold Achievement Award’. Although SIA is new to the WasteWise Program, we have already shown dedication to its waste reduction goals.
In 2005, SIA recycled 99 percent of its waste. The company also has a strong waste prevention program refurbishing and repairing more than 2,500 tons of steel and 10 tons of plastic products, and sending more than 6,500 tons of packaging materials to suppliers for packaging reuse in 2005. SIA reduced the amount of scrap generated by its manufacturing processes by 25% and decreased waste discharged by 88%. SIA was the first automotive assembly plant to achieve “Zero Landfill” status. Since May 2004, SIA has sent zero waste from its operations to a landfill; a first among auto assembly plants in the United States.
